Mt Vernon

Wow--we are really glad we made Mt Vernon a stop on this trip. The home and grounds are beautiful and we learned more about George Washington and his wife Martha. For instance, he wasn't just a gentleman farmer by title. He really loved farming and preferred being called "Farmer George." He brought innovation to his plantation by inventing things like his threshing barn and his understanding of composting. Even the formal dining room reflects his passion for the land as seen in small decorative details on the walls and ceilings.
There are several pens of farm animals as it is still a working farm. Three young lambs had escaped from their pen and we tried to get them back in but they ran from us. We spent a lot of our time outdoors. There was an "actor" playing the part of GW's best friend and physician and we were able to ask him a lot of questions as we sat on the veranda overlooking the Potomac. It could not have been more lovely.

This was one of our favorites so far and one we would recommend.
