Ok, this time we really were lost. For those of you studying us on the spot Monday you may have concluded we had lost our marbles. We would heartily agree. Leaving Mt Vernon, we found ourselves on a tree-lined road that was heading the general direction we knew we needed to go. There was never a single sign telling us the name of this slice of paradise and with light hearts we sailed on with it, figuring that eventually we would see markers for the interstate we needed. We ended up in DC in the late afternoon. I am a terrible navigator under pressure and we found ourselves in a part of town that was...diverse. Because of road work, lack of signage and the various accompanying tensions it was all getting worse. To be honest, I had to restrain myself from tearing the map into tiny shreds and letting them fly out the window.
Jere found a police officer parked in a fast food parking lot and he straightened us out. We were far from where we needed to be but after more than an hour we were on track along with about a million commuters heading for their homes north of the city.
We shared a few good laughs later about the fact that some of you probably knew where we were more than we did. Next time, don't be surprised if we call and ask, "Where are we?"
Our "home" for the week is in Maryland (will post about it soon) and it is delightful.

Actually we were curious about your route that day. I actually said to Angela, "Why are they two blocks east of the White House? There is nothing over there you'd want to visit." My dad once lived (I am talking early 1970's) in "South East." And Angela & I took a "diverse" route home from the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (most awesome building we saw in Washington) that took us right through that parts of DC. We were really glad to find ourselves back on GW Parkway in Virginia! Probably this part of your trip to Washington is the one that will stand out most clearly!
