Williamsburg was high on our list when we began planning this trip. We have girls who have long wished to wear dresses from colonial times, and when young Jere learned he could purchase a toy gun in Williamsburg he began saving his money towards that. So this has been a part of the trip that has been mightily anticipated.
Unfortunately, Noelle seemed to have relapsed this morning and it was clear she would not be able to go. (Dad) Jere took her back to the hotel while I sallied forth with the rest. It was a disappointment to not be together, but we are learning along with the kids to stay flexible and find contentment.
Our first event was to listen to what Thomas Jefferson had to say. We especially enjoyed his comments about Patrick Henry (who also has things to say about TJ!) and his reflection on the proper manner of greeting the President of the United States (hint: it is not with a standing ovation). Next, we participated in a couple of court trials and visited the shops and buildings. Just when younger ones were beginning to lose interest, a fife and drum marching band paraded through the main street. Of course, this only whetted young Jere's appetite for firearms. All of the ladies in our family liked visiting the millinery and dress shop and talked at length with the shopkeeper (who studied historic textiles just so she could get the gig at Williamsburg). We also enjoyed the apothecary and the silversmith.
Our plan had been to spend the afternoon watching some outdoor programs (mini-dramas, really) on the American Revolution, but a terrible wind kicked up (ugh!) and eventually it was too much. Dirt from the roads and paths was pelting us, getting in eyes, mouths, etc. Enough. It was time to go.
Jere and Noe spent the day quietly: napping, cleaning the van, reading. They picked us up and we were glad to see she was feeling better. We are praying that she will be ready to join us tomorrow. Jere and I thought we might visit the Jamestown settlement Sunday, but Williamsburg was so impressive we may return.
Happy Mother's Day to all the moms reading this, and especially to our moms, Grayce and Gretchen! Hope you all have a blessed day.
You guys are such troopers! Praying Noelle is feeling better soon and all those yucky bugs leave your family alone for the rest of your trip!

It is so cool to see pictures of you guys visiting the same places we did! Have fun at Mount Vernon (you'll love it there)!
ReplyDeleteCarol and I went to Williamsburg with our dad when I was 12 and she was 14. I have fond memories of that trip! We have a picture of my dad in the stocks.
